Drama – Brazil 2024
The 1970s in Rio – a true family story – political, visually striking, moving, overwhelming – Best International Feature Film, Oscar 2025
Brazil, 1971: Rubens Paiva, a former left-wing member of parliament, lives with his family in Rio de Janeiro. The city is vibrant, colourful and full of life. At the same time, the grip of the military dictatorship is an integral part of everyday life.
One day, Rubens is abducted – and disappears. His family is left in the dark; they know neither where he is nor whether he is alive. Eunice, his wife, fights for him and the other victims of the dictatorship, whilst at the same time trying to find peace in these turbulent times by preserving a fragile family happiness.
Director Walter Salles tells the true story of the Paiva family – whom he used to visit as a child – in a moving way, through wonderful imagery. His deeply humanistic film is a declaration of love for a democratic Brazil and pays tribute to those who fought – and continue to fight – against injustice.
‘A miracle unfolds in this film, right before your eyes: Walter Salles has created a family here that you follow over three decades, and you believe every second of it.” – Wim Wenders
