Ingeborg Bachmann 1926 | 1973 | 2026

Ingeborg Bachmann is described as the ‘diva of poetry’ and revered as an ‘icon’. It is time to set aside such labels and venture to rediscover Bachmann! Her work is full of contradictions, enigmas and allusions, and resists a one-dimensional reading. It is a defiant body of work. And the poet herself also bears distinct traits of defiance. To mark the 100th anniversary of the writer’s birth, Ingeborg Gleichauf explores this specific Bachmannian defiance in her essay. A journey through Bachmann’s work, as well as through her correspondence, which has been published gradually over recent years, reveals a poet who repeatedly unsettles and surprises.

The Strobel bookshop will be offering a few copies at the book table during the evening.
