Lighten Up! In the rhythm of day and night

What is it about the biological clocks of living beings and the influence of daylight? When and how do we sleep and when do we need activity? Whether bats, plants, insects or humans, they have all internalised the 24-hour day-night rhythm, which they use to optimally adapt their behaviour and bodily functions.

"Lighten Up!" explores the
connection between living organisms and the circadian (circa diem = approximately one day) rhythm together with designers, artists and architects. The show simultaneously celebrates the power and beauty of daylight, introduces the mysteries of biological clocks and explores the secrets of sleep and dreams. "Lighten Up!" not only reminds us of the course of the sun in the sky, but also of the necessity of natural light for a healthy life.

Dark nights are also needed for a healthy life, but these are becoming ever brighter - thanks to artificial light. This has negative consequences for all living beings. So let's reclaim the night and brighten up the day!

An exhibition by the EPFL Pavilions Lausanne with extensions by the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur.
