Vera Bauer's portrait of Beethoven conveys a vivid picture of the composer's youth in a poor, child-rich musical household, at a time when the approaching French Revolution was increasingly determining people's lives and thoughts in Germany too; of Beethoven's early musical genius; of his move to Vienna and the all-dominant urge to devote himself entirely to art; of close friendships and dramatic love destinies - and of the great misfortune of his life, the loss of his hearing.
In the midst of such extreme experiences, Ludwig van Beethoven, as a comprehensive, passionate spirit, created an immense musical oeuvre, a 'philosophy in tones' that continues to challenge and move even after two centuries.
