MAXED OUT

The Berlin-based quartet has carved out a space for itself across genres – not as a compromise, but as a fundamental choice. Jazz is their home, but the doors are wide open: to electronic textures, to urban beats, to sounds that defy easy categorisation. Maxed Out don’t call it fusion, crossover or nu-jazz – they simply call it their sound.

The band consists of four musicians who think of their instruments as going far beyond their traditional roles. Maxim Frischmann plays the saxophone, but also the sampler and synth FX – he is the bandleader and, at the same time, the architect of the sonic transitions between acoustic and electronic. Björn-Atle Anfinsen takes on the second melodic voice with his trumpet and FX processing, which at times sounds lyrical, at times alienating, and at times like a signal from another world. Thomas Fuller provides the rhythmic and harmonic foundation on bass – present, grounded, urban. And Lucas Johnson not only sits behind the drums but also operates a sampler at the same time, blurring the line between live performance and produced beats.

The result is music that is best allowed to sink in at your own pace. Maxed Out does not rely on an immediate impact. Their arrangements only reveal themselves gradually – layer by layer, beat by beat. The beats are relaxed, never urgent. What sounds familiar at first reveals its own rules over time. This is the band’s musical signature: a sound that leaves room for interpretation, yet never becomes arbitrary.

Their roots lie deep in modern jazz – in the freedom of improvisation, in the dialogue between the voices, in the willingness to embrace the unexpected. At the same time, they have a strong affinity for electronic music, for beat culture, for the way producers build atmospheres using loops, samples and effects. The electronic elements grow out of the jazz, and the jazz breathes through the electronic layers. You don’t hear: ‘here comes the jazz bit, here comes the beat.’ You hear: Maxed Out.

Berlin is more than just a place to live for Maxed Out – it is a resonant space. The city, with its club culture, its openness to electronic music and its vibrant jazz scene, has helped shape the band’s sound. They do not belong to a single scene; they bridge several.

Maxed Out have a clear artistic vision that runs through all their releases: music that swings without being nostalgic, that is electronic without being mechanical, that grooves without being simplistic. Maxed Out are four musicians, one band, one soundscape – and it’s well worth listening to them now.
