Strange indeed. 250 years of prints based on works by Caspar Wolf
Today, they are regarded as masterpieces of European landscape painting. Caspar Wolf (1735–1783), a native of Murian, painted these works at the time on commission from the Bernese publisher Abraham Wagner. Around 200 oil paintings were produced in this way. They were intended to serve as models for copperplate engravings, which Wagner planned to publish alongside texts by naturalists. The first edition appeared in 1777, was entitled ‘Remarkable Views of the Swiss Mountains’ and presented a completely new image of the Alps. The exhibition showcases this pioneering project through Wolf’s originals from the collection of the Aargauer Kunsthaus and prints from various series.
