New Wilderness
Surprising herbs growing between paving stones, pioneer trees on derelict plots, rare plant species on unused wasteland, wild plants along railway tracks, non-native species spreading along the edges of motorways: In our urban environment, we are surrounded by spontaneous vegetation that exploits every available ecological niche to lead an untamed existence.
This particular form of nature deserves not only to be appreciated for its unique qualities today, but also to be nurtured. It offers the potential to develop a hopeful approach to our contemporary landscapes and living environments that is both ecologically conscious and free from nostalgia.
The exhibition presents selected projects from landscape architecture, research and ecology that promote a new wilderness through innovative perspectives and share a forward-looking understanding of urban nature. It was conceived by Studio Céline Baumann in collaboration with the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur.
