Niklaus Nuspliger ● Brexit, Bregret and the lessons for Switzerland

Book launch

Ten years on from the 2016 Brexit referendum, Switzerland’s European policy is entering a decisive phase. The future of the bilateral approach is highly uncertain, and Switzerland could soon face similar questions to those faced by the UK following its withdrawal from the EU. Why is the British government finding it so difficult to manage migration following the end of the free movement of persons? What were the specific consequences of leaving the EU single market for British companies and the City of London? And where is the rapprochement between London and Brussels heading? Drawing on reports and analyses, the book highlights the lessons Switzerland can learn from the British experience. It also examines why a majority of Britons now regret Brexit.

Niklaus Nuspliger studied political science and international relations in Geneva, Madrid and Sydney. As a journalist for the NZZ, he reported from Bern as a parliamentary correspondent and from New York as a foreign correspondent. From 2013 to 2019, he was the EU correspondent in Brussels, where he published the book Europe between Populist Dictatorship and Bureaucratic Rule. Until 2025, he reported for the NZZ from London on the UK and Ireland.

On stage, he will be in conversation with Georg Häsler.
