The Camerata Zürich is a chamber orchestra with a clear profile: a lean line-up, a differentiated sound and a repertoire outside the classical mainstream. Since its foundation in 1957 by Räto Tschupp, it has focused on unconventional programmes ...
Polyptych
J.S. Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 3
Frank Martin: Polyptyque for violin and strings
Richard Dubugnon: Concerto pour Cordes (world premiere) J.S. Bach: Harpsichord Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052
In this programme, ‘Polyptyque’ is more than just the title of a single work. The term also describes the structure of the evening itself: a musical polyptych comprising several panels, showcasing different manifestations of polyphony, counterpoint and the relationship between the solo part and the ensemble.
The programme opens with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concerto. Here, the energy arises entirely from the interplay of the strings. Voices intertwine, lines cross, rhythmic impulses travel through the ensemble and converge once more in the tutti. Bach demonstrates just how much movement and tension can arise from pure polyphony.
Frank Martin’s *Polyptyque* takes this idea into a different realm. The work draws on the Passion of Christ and unfolds like a series of musical images. The solo violin takes on changing roles and perspectives throughout. At times it steps forward, at times it blends in; at times it seems to embody a character, at times an inner emotion. In this way, the work itself becomes a polyptych: a sequence of individual panels that only reveal their full meaning when viewed in context.
The world premiere of a new commissioned composition by the internationally acclaimed Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon adds yet another voice to the mix. The work has been commissioned to mark the 70th anniversary of the Camerata Zürich. In this context, the world premiere does not stand alone in the programme, but serves as a contemporary contribution to a concert that explores structure, polyphony and sonic perspective.
The programme concludes with Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052, featuring the Swiss harpsichordist Vital Julian Frey. Here, the interplay between the solo instrument and the tutti is once again clearly defined. The harpsichord sets the tone; the ensemble responds, supports, contradicts and drives the music forward
