The end of the Second World War: An attempt to assassinate Szczuka, a political opponent, goes awry; instead, two innocent people lose their lives. Consequently, the former members of the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) in the resistance, Maciek, Andrzej and Drewnowski, go into hiding at the Hotel Monopol in a small provincial town. Whilst a banquet celebrating the victory is taking place there, they commemorate their fallen comrades, become entangled in romantic entanglements, get drunk and finally set about trying to catch Szczuka after all. In the process, Poland’s past and future are metaphorically negotiated at the Hotel Monopol.
