Prof. Dr. Ludger Lohmann

Ludger Lohmann was born in Herne/Westphalia in 1954. He studied school and church music, musicology, philosophy and geography at the Musikhochschule and University of Cologne. His teachers were Wolfgang Stockmeier (organ) and Hugo Ruf (harpsichord). Further organ studies led him to Anton Heiller in Vienna and Marie-Claire Alain in Paris.

He received prizes at several international organ competitions, including the ARD Competition in Munich in 1979 and the Grand Prix de Chartres in 1982.

In 1981, his highly regarded musicological dissertation "Articulation on Keyboard Instruments in the 16th-18th Centuries" was published, now a standard work for performers. For some years now, his research interest has been in the field of Romantic organ music.

From 1979-1984, Ludger Lohmann taught organ at the Cologne Conservatoire, and since 1983 he has lived and worked in Stuttgart as a professor at the Conservatoire. In addition, he was organist at the Cathedral Church of St. Eberhard for 25 years.

He performs worldwide; radio, television and CD productions document his repertoire diversity with a focus on early and romantic organ music.

Ludger Lohmann is a sought-after jury member of many international organ competitions. A central concern for him is teaching in his Stuttgart organ class, which attracts talented students from all over the world. Guest professorships and masterclasses take him to numerous conservatoires and universities in many countries and to international organ academies, including those in Haarlem (Netherlands) and Gothenburg (Sweden), where he is also a senior researcher in the university's organ research project (GOArt)
