Radical Classical

Modern ballet with the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS | 16+

classical | radical | erotic

Which art form combines classical music and movement? Ballet – of course. The Gauthier Dance JUNIORS, under the direction of choreographer, dancer and musician Eric Gauthier, demonstrate just how young, fresh and vibrant this combination can be with ‘Radical Classical’. The JUNIORS show just how effortlessly classical music blends with modern ballet and can inspire a love of classical music.

Seven renowned choreographers bring works by Strauss, Beethoven, Debussy and others to life – sometimes humorous, sometimes erotic, sometimes contemplative, always masterful. Andreas Heise’s ‘Frühlingsstimmen’ sees seven dancers soar like glittering birds to Strauss’s waltz. Eric Gauthier’s ‘Orchestra of the Wolves’ transforms Beethoven’s Fifth into a whimsical wolf hunt. Marie Chouinard’s interpretation of Debussy’s ‘Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune’ shocks with a mystical creature that explores the limits of the body. Aszure Barton’s ‘Lascilo Perdere’ captivates with a five-minute kiss set to Vivaldi; Ohad Naharin’s ‘B/olero’ impresses with dynamic duets, whilst Mauro de Candia’s ‘La morte del Cigno’ offers a radically new interpretation of Saint-Saëns’ ‘Dying Swan’ – and Marco Goecke’s ‘FURIA (for Gudrun)’ moves the audience with tender intensity set to Baroque music.

Short introductory films accompany each piece. Eight young dancers master all styles with flying colours – a ballet evening for all generations aged 16 and over.
