Rental Family
Feature film (Japan/USA, 2025), directed by Hikari
‘Rental Family’ tells the story of a US actor (Oscar winner Brendan Fraser) living in Tokyo who is searching for meaning in his life until he manages to land an unusual job. Working for a Japanese ‘rental family’ agency, he takes on various roles, playing the part of a son, husband or father within a family. As he becomes increasingly immersed in his clients’ lives and helps them fill the gaps in their families, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between acting and reality. As he grapples with the moral implications of his new job, he rediscovers the meaning of life, a sense of belonging and the beauty of human relationships.
