Star actress Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) loses herself in the Engadine fog and in illusions of her past youth. Lars Eidinger plays a small but important role as the theatre director who offers her a meaningful role.

Twenty years have passed since Maria Enders' brilliant stage debut in Wilhelm Melchior's play "Malojaschlange". As the young Sigrid, she seduced an older woman named Helena. Today, the ambitious young director Klaus Diesterweg (Lars Eidinger) wants to stage the play again. This time with Enders in the role of Helena and a new young Sigrid (Chloë Grace Moretz). Enders struggles with the offer and is confronted twice with her own ageing due to the death of her friend Wilhelm Melchior. Thanks to the persuasion of her assistant Val (Kristen Stewart), she finally accepts the role and the two dissimilar women retreat to the Engadin for their first readings, where theatre and life become increasingly confused.

Olivier Assayas skilfully interweaves the inner struggles of the ageing diva with a generational conflict, with questions about the relationship between trash and high culture and with those about the relationship between art and life. Almost dapper, with short hair, responsible and very determined, Lars Eidinger plays an important supporting role whose perseverance strongly influences the story.
