Sonderfall – On neutral ground

Documentary – Switzerland 2026

Switzerland is neutral – but what does that mean? ‘Sonderfall’ is an entertaining exploration of Switzerland and its self-image… and not entirely neutral

TRAILER

Stéphane Goël is sixty years old, the son of farmers from Vaud, and one of the most experienced and successful directors in French-speaking Switzerland. Mehdi Atmani, the son of an Algerian fisherman who emigrated to Switzerland, is half Goël’s age, works as a journalist and has never made a film before. Their research journey into the topic of Swiss neutrality takes this unlikely duo across the globe and through time.

Their journey begins at the site of the Battle of Marignano in 1515, continues to the Réduit – the national fallback position during the Second World War – and takes them to meet the initiators of the neutrality initiative to be submitted in 2024. They visit the Eurosatory defence exhibition in Paris, the UN Security Council in New York, the Korean Demilitarised Zone and numerous other locations. In a tone that is by turns tragicomic and ironic, and always with a dynamic rhythm, Goël and Atmani explore a myth that is ultimately beyond comprehension.

“‘Sonderfall’ is an entertaining exploration of Switzerland and its self-image; and with a view to the autumn referendum on the neutrality initiative, it is a clearly positioned, yet enormously instructive for all sides and, above all, highly entertaining referendum booklet.” – Sennhauser’s Film Blog

“The film moves elegantly between road movie, documentary and philosophical self-reflection.” – Cineman
