Sousta Politiki

Pâqu'son Music Festival

Greeks who fled Turkey founded rembetiko music, this "Greek blues", almost 100 years ago through the fusion of Piraean and Smyrnaean folk tunes - in other words, the port of Athens and the city of Izmir. In other words, through the meeting of Europe and Asia.

Seen in this light, the Strasbourg quartet Sousta Politiki, three two Turks and two Frenchmen, brings the Rembetiko back to its eastern roots. To classical Ottoman music, to the dances of the Aegean islands, to the songs of Istanbul, to the songs of Anatolian wandering singers. The five musicians seek out this background in a very personal reading by performing not only traditional pieces but also pieces they have composed themselves.

Sparingly but virtuously played on accordion, violoncello, tanbour and Iranian percussion. And sung by the charismatic Zeynep Kaya (of the noiserock band Hermetic Delight), who has been washed with many sounds.
