Stick Around | The Queers Are Alive

Warning: potential faux pas alert. Has your child or someone close to you come out as queer? Are your knees secretly trembling as you take your first steps into queer territory? Do conversations about this topic with family and friends feel like running the gauntlet?

A warm welcome to our survival training. Join us on a scenic tour through a collage of young queer voices, performance elements and explanatory segments, and experience how the scenes invite you to shift your perspective. Allow yourselves to observe, with curiosity, the urge towards binaries – towards right and wrong. And afterwards, at the ‘gay uncles’ coffee klatch’ over jelly, take the opportunity to ask questions without hesitation, to address and dispel prejudices, fill in the gaps in your knowledge, and articulate any uncertainties you may have when interacting with young people whose sexual orientation and/or gender identity is currently evolving.

Yes, that’s right: taking part is an option, but not compulsory. You choose the format. Let’s dare to create a space for knowledge-sharing together. It’s OK to put your foot in it – it won’t strain our relationships.

‘The Queers Are Alive’ sees itself as an artistic intervention that aims to relieve the pressure on young queer people, so that they do not have to act as experts on themselves and their generation. The invitation is deliberately aimed at the wider circle of young queer people, at those who have had little or no previous exposure to queerness and suicidal tendencies, as well as anyone else who is interested.

We are convinced that difficult things take practice. Let’s get started.

Stick Around’s artistic practice is dedicated to the various aspects surrounding the complex issue of youth suicide. Queer young people belong to a demonstrably vulnerable group.
