The Apartment

Billy Wilder, USA 1960

During the festive season, two lost souls find each other. Billy Wilder's romantic comedy is one of the most bitter and beautiful Christmas films - and a great classic in film history!

C.c. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a small player in the insurance company Consolidated Life. But with his bachelor flat, he has a trump card up his sleeve. Centrally located, it is the perfect love nest for the company's senior executives. In the hope of promotion, he regularly makes his flat available. Meanwhile, at work, he falls in love with lift operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine). On Christmas Eve, after leaving the flat to his superior Jeff Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), he finds Fran unconscious in his bedroom. She has tried to take her own life with sleeping pills.

More than usual in his comedies, Billy Wilder gives a lot of space to human drama at Christmas. This earned him five Oscars in 1960. Wilder brilliantly combines bitter moments with satirical commentary on business ethics and ducky behaviour, sometimes to the point of grotesqueness.
