The Last Viking
Comedy, Crime, Drama – Denmark 2025
This unlikely film is darkly humorous, unconventional and, in the end, moving – wonderfully offbeat: the brilliant Mads Mikkelsen
After 15 years in prison for a bank robbery, Anker is released. At last he can reclaim his share of the loot, which his brother Manfred buried back then. But Manfred suffers from dissociative identity disorder and is now John Lennon. He has no idea where the money is. To jog his memory, the brothers drive to their parents’ old house, which is now being let out by an amateur boxer and her husband. Perhaps it will help Manfred if they bring the Beatles back to life...?
“When traumatised people jump out of cars and think they’re the Beatles, you’ve landed in the realm of Danish grotesque. Director Anders Thomas Jensen takes his pitch-black humanism to the extreme in the fast-paced comedy ‘The Last Viking’. Mads Mikkelsen shines once again with a performance of slapstick absurdity.” – NZZ
“Somehow, despite all the bloodshed, ‘The Last Viking’ is a truly heart-warming story about sibling love.” – Radio Times
“Few directors manage to juggle genres so effortlessly and make tonal shifts so seamless as Jensen does here. On paper, it all seems unlikely to work … yet this unlikely film is consistently entertaining, unconventional and, in the end, touching.” – The Hollywood Reporter
