The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008)
Josh Safdie, USA 2008; 71 mins E/e
The likeable and kleptomaniac Eléonore drifts through New York and on to Boston. Josh Safdie’s debut feature film, in which he largely improvises as he follows his main character, sitting alongside her in the car in a supporting role.
The somewhat lost but curious Eléonore searches everywhere for something, even in the pockets of strangers who smile sadly long after she has disappeared with her haul. One might think they owe the young woman a debt of gratitude.
Josh Safdie’s dreamy debut – a witty blend of subtle comedy and plenty of New York neorealism reminiscent of John Cassavetes – was the only US film to screen at the Quinzaine in Cannes in 2008. Eléonore Hendricks, who regularly works with the Safdie brothers in various capacities, has the charisma required for the screen – less an actress performing a role than a credible flâneuse to whom unexpectedly bizarre things happen.
