Thomas Mann: Kretschmar's Lecture
Beethoven's Opus 111 in "Dr. Faustus"
with Johannes Friedemann (piano) and Bodo Krumwiede (narrator).
The piano sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven discussed in this musical novel is the groundbreaking music of its time, which is explained at length by Wendell Kretschmar, an eccentric, stuttering organist, in the house of "Gemeinnützige Tätigkeit" (charitable activity) in "Kaisersaschern".
Kretschmar's lecture becomes an "aphrodisiac for the brain" in dialogue with the piano. Framed by the first and second movements of the sonata, the clever but far-fetched explanations of Beethoven's Opus 111, with pointed musical interludes, lead in an amusing way to the intellectual climax: the farewell to the sonata as a musical art form after its completion in the second movement of Beethoven's last piano sonata.
