Thomas Mann and the Theatre – a lecture by Laura de Weck
As a novelist, Thomas Mann is one of the most widely read German-language authors. As a playwright, however, he is hardly known. In 1907, he staged his first and only play, *Fiorenza*. The classical theme of asceticism and sensuality is set against an almost post-dramatic structure: prosaic dialogue, an open dramaturgy and hardly any plot.
Critics at the time reacted negatively. Deeply hurt, Mann turned against the ‘primacy of drama’ over the novel. In her lecture ‘Only drama would have been worthy of your torments!’, Laura de Weck sheds light on the writer’s vulnerability and his aesthetic reflections on the impact of drama.
Following the keynote lecture, guests are invited to a drinks reception.
