Videoex Festival 2024: Artist Focus: Nguyen Trinh Thi

"I want to unpick the way we look at things," says filmmaker and video artist Nguyen Trinh Thi, who is considered a pioneer of independent cinema in Vietnam, about her practice, which brings together elements of indigenous culture, local activism, music, sound, ecology and technology. In her work, she deals intensively with the complex and traumatic history of her home country and its repercussions in the present. In doing so, she evokes memories as an alternative method of accessing veiled or unwritten histories. Montage is Nguyen's favourite artistic strategy for exploring multiple identities and narratives.
