‘Of Animals and Other People’ with Lea Schneider
What sets us apart from animals? And what, exactly, is an ‘animal’? In eleven essays, Lea Schneider writes about non-human persons and animism, about men who judge animals and animals who couldn’t care less, about evolution and freedom, and about dreams as a form of resistance.
When Lea Schneider began observing birds, she learnt that only the males sing – to attract females, preserve the species, and in accordance with evolutionary theory. But in reality, 71 per cent of female songbirds sing too. And, just like the males, they do so not merely out of necessity, but also simply because they enjoy it.
‘Of Animals and Other People’ offers us a radically different perspective on our fellow creatures and, in the midst of the climate crisis, brings hope: for a future in which we build new worlds together.
An essential re-exploration of the relationship between humans and animals: surprising, poetic, and world-expanding.
