When food becomes the enemy

New insights into an underestimated clinical condition

Eating disorders often remain hidden for a long time. Terms such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating do not simply refer to issues of diet or body weight, but rather to a complex interplay of psychological distress, family dynamics, social expectations and biological factors. At the same time, research shows that eating disorders by no means affect only young people or women, and that they take many more forms than common stereotypes would suggest.

What factors contribute to eating disorders? Why are they so difficult to recognise and treat? And what do the latest research findings say about prevention and treatment?
