First of all, we need a breather. But after just a short climb around the bend, an incredible view opens up before us. A fascinating psychogeography of Switzerland reveals itself. Many a prominent figure from the worlds of art and culture has sought therapy in this land of dark forests and tranquil lakes. From Robert Walser and Annemarie Schwarzenbach to Bertha Pappenheim. And the influence of Switzerland’s spiritual landscapes extends far beyond the country’s borders, as demonstrated by the example of the Situationists in France. All these interconnections coalesce into a rushing river that flows right up to the present day.

Dusk is slowly falling over the valley. We are gradually beginning to understand why Jungian symbols and archetypes appear in numerous works of contemporary art, literature and even in Hollywood films. It is a realisation of all that has shaped our self-image today. And an attempt to explain why concepts such as ‘the inner child’ or ‘shadow work’ help to shape the everyday language of today’s youth. Psychotherapy and psychiatry have probably never been as free of taboo as they are today. The landscapes of the soul influence the stories we tell ourselves. And these, in turn, have an effect on us and our environment.

Landscapes of the Soul

Switzerland has been home to a number of soul searchers over the years, such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Nietzsche and Carl Gustav Jung. ...

Here, young people have their say. They talk about how they cope with the challenges of modern life. And practising therapists shed light on how social developments shape our mental health. A fitting end to this Sunday walk.
