Literary Tips in November

After the big Zurich Reads, November is a little more sparse in literary terms, but no less beautiful. Here are my tips:

Reading. Think. Discuss.

Languages are fundamental to understanding, and what could be more important in times of crisis and social rifts than dialogue? The reading circle launched by Litar and Viceversa affirms faith in the quiet power of literature and in conversation. To this end, it is also dedicated to multilingualism and understanding between languages and people. Advance reading is done in French and/or in German.

The long night of the debut

Two of my former work colleagues are reading from their works at the big debut show at the Literaturhaus. Julian Schmidli (Zeit der Mauersegler) and Reda El Arbi ([empfindungsfaehig]) both take us into other worlds in their own way, whether with a turbulent trip through the Alps that asks how much secrecy a friendship can take or in a fast-paced and razor-sharp science fiction novel about the future power and empathy of AI units. Read on: Nelio Biedermann, Elisabeth Bronfen, Gianna Olinda Cadonau and ZanRé.

On the courage and fury of language

She is one of the most renowned translators in the German-speaking world. For her new translation of "Don Quixote of La Mancha", she received the Zug Translators' Scholarship in 2003 and the Johann Heinrich Voss Prize of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in 2009. Ten years later, Susanne Lange was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for her translation of the first novel "Gringo Champ", written by the Mexican author Aura Xilonen at the age of nineteen.

What prompted her to retranslate the Spanish classic of over a thousand pages? How did she go about it? Using concrete examples, moderator Gabriela Stöckli, managing director of the translation house Looren, will shed light on the various facets of this discipline in conversation. The speaker is Yves Raeber, actor, director and translator.

The dream of flying

When Milena Moser travels from San Francisco to read from her new novel, you can be sure that the bright colours of the Californian metropolis have travelled with her and make grey autumn days glow. At the Bernhard Theater, bestselling author Milena Moser talks with literary scholar Julia Knapp about "The Dream of Flying", in which she tells of difficult things with great lightness and fabulosity. Milena Moser's books about her life in the USA are also highly recommended, such as, Happiness Always Looks Different (2015), Behind These Blue Mountains (2017) and The Beautiful Life of the Dead (2019).
