live music in June

There is something of everything this month: indoors, outdoors, dark, bright, electronic, acoustic. The summer can come.

Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek

Last month, Moğollar was the forefathers of Turkish psychedelic music. This month, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, the grandchildren of this genre, are coming to Moods for the "Psychedelich Music Explosion". Singer Yıldırım and the members of her band are based in five European countries between Great Britain and Turkey and found together in Germany eight years ago. They give the Anatolian sound of their predecessors an update with influences from modern funk and pop.

Five countries, one band – between Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Turkey Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek spin intoxicating Turkish pop music.

Aquaserge

Same place, few days later: I once saw the French band Aquaserge live at a small avant-garde festival in southern Germany more than ten years ago. Back then I was thrilled by their unconventional music between weird sound collages and straight song structures, between avant-garde and pop. I'm all the more thrilled to rediscover them after all these years and realize that they've expanded into a collective whose members also play in well-known bands like Tame Impala or Stereolab. And that they haven't lost any of their magic since then.

Aquaserge

Since several years the experimental Avant-Rock band Aquaserge has been the driving force on the international music scene.

Tocotronic

What is there to write about Tocotronic? Perhaps that the Hamburg band has been writing songs since its founding in 1993, in which every single line can serve as a slogan for an attitude to life and its own inner truth. That this deep feeling of identification occurs in about one tenth of German-speaking listeners (own survey), while the remaining ninth can't understand it at all. That they succeeded again this year in the most absurd way, by releasing an album four weeks before the war with the title "Nie wieder Krieg" ("Never again war"). And that their concerts are great celebrations of intimacy and solidarity. Certainly also this time in the X-TRA.

Joan As Police Woman

"Beauty is the new punk rock" is Joan Wasser's credo. And while I'm still pondering what that actually means, her music as Joan As Police Woman tells me: Yes, that's probably how it is. The trained violinist from Maine makes music that transports beauty without sinking into kitsch. That presents vulnerability without seeming weak. And for her live performances between intensity and intimacy, the manageable stage of the Bogen F is exactly the right setting.

Den Dala

Every Wednesday during the summer, artists from the region play in the Barfussbar of the Frauenbadi on Stadthausquai. And for free (of course there is a collection). The band Den Dala, on the other hand, is a band from Zurich whose music couldn't fit better into a summer evening at the bathi: Laid-back world jazz, not hung over, but with a precise groove and funk attitude. In other words, something to dance to and to lie down to in equal measure.

Christian Löffler & Detect Ensemble

Admittedly, the combination of classical music and electronic music is not entirely new and all too often ends up in purely superficial mood music - think of the many Spotify playlists that are based on precisely this carried-concentrated mood. Christian Löffler's reworkings of old classical recordings by Beethoven, Chopin or Smetana, however, stand out pleasantly in this genre mix. The German house musician, known for his introverted soundscapes, builds the magic of old classical shellac records into his own electronica universe, creating a ghostly atmosphere. At Kaufleuten, you can find out how well this combination works when played together with a live ensemble.
