Live music in November

It would be impossible to list all the acts worth seeing at Moods this November – there’s so much going on. But it’s not just those interested in music from around the world who’ll be in for a treat this month; there are also some big names from the indie scene playing elsewhere.

“Jazz is Dead” is the name of the record label founded by Adrian Younge, on which he releases collaborations with big names from the worlds of Afrobeat, hip-hop and Brazilian pop, amongst others. Listening to his productions, one can be sure of one thing: jazz is not dead, any more than soul and all the other genres through which analogue warmth flows. More warmth – just the thing for a cold November.

Muted synth sounds, albums recorded on cassette, a dreamy, echoing baritone voice: In the 2000s, John Maus anticipated much of what was to become big a few years later during the great 80s revival decade. But Maus is far more than a pioneer or trendsetter: he is a loner, a sound-obsessed artist, a seeker of meaning, a madman. And on stage, the great hypnotist of the masses.

Once a year, Moods dedicates itself to Lusophone music – that is, music from Portuguese-speaking countries. The musical characteristics of Portugal, Angola, Brazil and Cape Verde have blended into a particularly exciting mix of genres through colonial history and the globalisation of musical styles. The two guests this evening, the Angolan-Portuguese ‘Kuduro Queen’ Pongo and the mysterious Cape Verdean-Portuguese group Fidju Kitxora, demonstrate this impressively.

Uche Yara, an artist born in Austria and based in Berlin, is a rising star. Initially hired as a live guitarist in Mavi Phoenix’s band, she played her first solo gig after finishing school, supporting Bilderbuch at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Since then, the multi-instrumentalist, who defies genre classification, has released two EPs and has been showered with newcomer awards.
