Where Zurich dances outdoors in July

In summer, Zurich’s nightlife moves outdoors. Not entirely, of course. The basements remain important, as do the sound systems in the clubs. But as soon as the nights warm up, DJs, collectives and dancers are drawn to the lake, into gardens, onto terraces, into forest huts, to old shipyard sites or up onto the hills surrounding the city.

The exciting thing about it is that it’s not just the big festivals that define the summer. Often, it’s the smaller, more flexible events that feel particularly vibrant: day dances, club outings, pop-up venues, small collectives and temporary spaces. For a few weeks, Zurich becomes softer, more open, more improvised. You dance earlier, see more of the sky, sweat less in basements and sometimes get the feeling that the city might still have a few surprises in store.

ZOA City is bringing electronic music to the Dolder Kunsteisbahn. Although the Zürich Openair is taking a break in 2026, ZOA City is helping to satisfy some of the demand for big summer sounds. On 11 July, Armin van Buuren presents The Orb. The Dolder Kunsteisbahn is an interesting venue because it’s situated high above the city. It’s not a club, not a festival site in the traditional sense, and not a hidden spot in the woods either. Rather, it’s an urban summer stage with a view and a grand setting.

Why go: To see big names in electronic music high above the city’s rooftops.

If you prefer something smaller, more local and friendlier, you should keep an eye on ENZI81. On 11 July, the collective is hosting a Dayrave at the Hasenrain forest hut in Albisrieden. It sounds like one of those events that isn’t about maximum scale, but about a sense of community. The line-up is local, the venue is situated just above the city, and the atmosphere is likely to feel more like a gathering of friends than a commercial event.

It’s precisely these small day dances that are important for a scene. They’re less high-profile, but often more genuine. You don’t dance because an international headliner is on the flyer, but because someone has found a venue and has an idea of what an afternoon could be like.

Why go: For a small but brilliant taste of Zurich’s Daydance energy high above the city.

The CODA Openair on the Pfannenstiel is an electronic open-air event organised by the Flucht crew. CODA stands for ‘Chasing Our Dance Awakening’, and that’s exactly what it’s meant to feel like: a daytime party in the heart of nature, but professionally organised. On 11 July, people will be dancing on a large site above Meilen. The line-up includes DJ Tennis, Chris Lorenzo, the Dangel Twins and local DJs. A shuttle bus will take guests from Meilen railway station to the venue. This is exciting because CODA taps into the longing for the forest, wide open spaces and a temporary parallel world, without slipping completely into illegality or secrecy. A legal open-air event with a forest vibe.

Why go: For electronic dancing in the countryside, without any logistical chaos.

The Soluna Beach Club in Tiefenbrunnen is something of a Zurich holiday substitute, complete with sand beneath your feet. This pop-up venue combines a restaurant, beach lounges, lake views and a club scene featuring local and international DJs. At first glance, that sounds more like an aperitivo than an underground scene. But it is precisely this hybrid nature that makes the place so interesting. You can arrive early, eat, drink, people-watch, ease into the evening and, at some point, end up dancing after all. For a moment, Zurich feels more Mediterranean here than it actually is.

Why go: For sand, the lake, sunsets and DJ sets without the stuffy atmosphere of a basement.

The Palm 3 is returning to the Kongresshaus terrace this summer. In mid-July, this lakeside spot will be transformed into a temporary summer oasis with a terrace, lounges, a club, bars and street food. It’s less of a rave in the woods and more of a sophisticated city summer experience with a club option. A place for people who don’t want to head straight home after work, for balmy nights by the lake and for that feeling that Zurich can, at times, look a bit like a coastal town.

Why go: Because for a few weeks, Zurich acts as if it had palm trees.

Not every summer venue has to look like a rave straight away. From mid-July, Rundfunk.fm will once again transform the courtyard of the Landesmuseum into one of the city’s most beautiful meeting places: live music radio in front of a live audience, DJs, bars, food stalls and that special feeling where you only meant to pop in briefly after work but end up staying late.

Rundfunk.fm is no longer an insider tip, but it remains one of those events where Zurich comes across as pleasantly open. Centrally located, outdoors, free to attend and with a broad enough musical line-up to attract more than just club-goers.

Why go: For summer evenings combining radio, a bar and a spontaneous dance floor.

The Tree takes place at the Naglikon lido near Wädenswil and offers the wonderful prospect of swimming and raving. On 18 July, this spot on Lake Zurich will be transformed into a dance floor. The line-up includes Franky Rizardo, Beltran and other acts. The appeal lies in the combination. You don’t just come to dance, but also to enjoy the water. The lake, the meadow, the music, the sunset. A day-time dance event that feels less like a city event and more like a day out.

Why go: Because dancing after a swim is usually better.

Scheps is heading to Milandia on Lake Greifensee on 25 July. The line-up is impressive: Eris Drew, Octo Octa, I. Jordan, Jenny Cara, Ketia, Hervé, Kollegin and lllealuisa. Here, international club culture meets a leisure park set in the countryside. That might sound unusual at first, but that’s precisely what makes it so appealing. Milandia isn’t a classic hotspot of Zurich’s nightlife. That’s exactly why something unique can emerge there.

Why go: For a queer, energetic, spacious open-air vibe outside the usual club settings.

And what about the forest parties?

Of course, there are also events that don’t appear on ticketing platforms or cultural calendars. Small outdoor raves, spontaneous forest parties, private Telegram groups, Signal chats, Instagram Stories, QR codes on flyers. The scene has its own ways of sharing information.

This poses a dilemma for a public cultural calendar. On the one hand, these nights are often exactly what many people are looking for: less branding, less sponsorship, more adventure. On the other hand, their appeal lies in the fact that they aren’t widely publicised. And if they’re illegal or unauthorised, this raises further questions about noise, safety, litter, the natural environment and local residents.

Perhaps this is the most honest piece of advice: if you want to find places like this, you won’t find them via Google. You find them through people. Through conversations at smaller parties. Through DJs whose music you really listen to. Through collectives you follow. Through trust.

And perhaps it’s also part of the culture not to put certain things on lists.
