Out of the club: at the Street Parade, at the airport and in sacred spaces

On 1 August, Klaus leaves his usual haunts and celebrates outside the 25hours Hotel on Langstrasse. ‘Klaus ausser Haus’ is a National Day version of: ‘We’re taking the club and putting it outside the door.’

There’ll be two dancefloors, local and international DJs, and the typical Klaus mix of fun, mischief and controlled loss of control. On 1 August in particular, this is a lovely alternative to fireworks, bratwurst and patriotic solemnity.

Why go: Because Helvetia should just dance sometimes.

Of course, the Street Parade is no secret tip. But it is and always will be the moment when Zurich’s electronic culture takes over the streets. On 8 August, the city becomes an open-air dance floor with Love Mobiles, stages, after-parties and everything that goes with it.

What makes the Street Parade interesting, however, is not so much the event itself as the state of emergency it creates: for one day, what usually takes place in clubs, collectives, basements and niche venues is brought out into the open. For once, the city belongs not to traffic, but to the bass.

Why go: Because on this day, Zurich doesn’t just dance – it becomes a dancefloor in its own right.

A sermon, a rave, and then straight on to the Street Parade: Holy Groove at the Wasserkirche is probably one of the most unusual events of the Street Parade weekend. Amidst the church interior, bass, blessings and dance, a moment emerges that is not simply a club, not simply a church service and not simply a warm-up.

On 8 August, the Wasserkirche becomes a spiritual stop-off before the city’s biggest techno parade. Rather than mere escalation, this event is about transition, awareness, community and the question of whether ecstasy has not always had something sacred about it.

Musically, yours truly will be providing the sound, somewhere between devotional worship and the dance floor.

Why go: Because sermons and raves are closer together than you might think.

It’s simply better to party in the heart of the mountains. So it makes perfect sense that Club Nordstern and LAAX are hosting the Nordstern Moving Mountain Festival. The GALAAXY Mainstation on Crap Sogn Gion, at 2,252 metres above sea level, will become an open-air stage for electronic music.

The line-up includes MRAK, Yare, Aiia, Ardour, Les Deux, Dangel Twins, Crissi and Cayo, amongst others. A summer outing with a difference and a chance to escape the heat, at least for a moment.

Note: The event was originally announced for early July but has been postponed to late August due to the weather.

Sauvage Musique is returning to Zurich Airport on 22 August. The programme features a daytime party starting at 2 pm; the line-up will be announced shortly.

As a party venue, the airport is, of course, something of a special case. Amidst the concrete, the runways’ aesthetic and a sense of wanderlust, a different kind of open-air atmosphere emerges. Not a forest, not a lake, not a city park. Rather: a transit zone with bass.
