Dance tips for November

In Egos , the focus is on the self and on what becomes visible of it. Identity, projection and reflection are translated into choreographic dynamics that explore the relationship between the individual and the collective. Between solos, duets and group scenes, transitions emerge in which closeness and distance are constantly renegotiated. Movement becomes a mirror – where does the self begin, and where does the body react to its counterpart? The Le Lokart company invites you to encounter yourself through dance and to ask how much of the stage your own ego deserves.

The São Paulo Dance Company is visiting Winterthur with its new programme, presenting three choreographies that could hardly be more different. Shahar Binyamini’s I’ve Changed My Mind explores letting go as a creative force, allowing bodies to oscillate between individuality and the collective. Jiří Kylián’s Indigo Rose traces the transitions of youth and relationships through fast, precise movements, whilst Leilane Teles’ Umbó offers a poetic homage that allows the audience to witness the creative process. Set to music by Hans Zimmer, John Cage and Johann Sebastian Bach, the result is an evening of emotional breadth.

In Valse Valse Valse , Johanna Heusser takes on a classic – whilst lovingly deconstructing it. The waltz, a symbol of harmony and circular order, is here broken down into its constituent parts, twisted, delayed and fractured. From the familiar three-four time emerge new forms in which movement and stillness intertwine. Where once the salon and etiquette reigned, Heusser creates ruptures. A dance-based exploration of time, memory and rhythm.

In Joy(ce) , New Kyd transforms a true story into a stage piece: in 2006, the body of Joyce Carol Vincent was found in her London flat almost three years after her death. The solo explores this haunting image and asks what it means to disappear from view. Joy(ce) becomes a choreographic meditation on loneliness, memory and the delicate, resilient presence of those who fall out of sight yet continue to have an impact.
