The End of the West

Disinformation is both the new ‘supercandy’ and a powerful tool – never before has information been so readily available and the truth so hotly contested. Which stories, which narratives do we believe? Is there even such a thing as a shared sense of reality anymore? And what do narratives and disinformation do to us, what do we do with them, at the very least since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine?
Sascha works in a Russian troll factory. Or as her employer would put it: she is a writer on the big hit series of our time: ‘The End of the West’. Meanwhile, someone is sitting in a 1990s living room and switches on the television. What is ‘The End of the West’ supposed to be anyway? Nostalgia for a bygone era? The loss of trust in political processes? Or the creeping entrenchment within familiar information bubbles? Whilst the series plays on the television, something gradually dissolves amidst the screens and soft cushions. Something flickers there between sanctuary and threat, between familiarity and irritation. And there lies the autobiography of a female politician; the radio reports on an attack in a theatre. Yet all one really wants is to have a good time, especially now that liberalism is celebrating global victory and consumption is allowed to become identity.
Based on extensive research, author Lars Werner has written a narrative stage play about the structure and history of today’s disinformation from Russia. Director Fynn Malte Schmidt has turned it into an evening that straddles pop culture and politics. What world lies behind this world, and do we even want to see it? The question that remains: what do we want to believe in together?
‘The End of the West’ is entertaining, provokes confusion and concern – and delves into the ruins of the Cold War to uncover the origins of a fragile society. Perhaps it is all closer to us than we thought.

Getting there
The Winkelwiese Theatre is located in the listed Villa Tobler and is about 350 metres from the Haltestelle Kunsthaus. Two streets have to be crossed. The last 50 metres or so are on a paved road with a slight incline.
Wheelchair-accessible parking is available in the Hoch Promenade car park.
The main entrance is up two flights of stairs (three and five steps). To the right of the main entrance is a step-free side entrance that is only accessible when accompanied by staff. From here, a lift takes you to the foyer.
In the house
The box office is mobile and is not always in the same place. Due to protective measures (corona virus), glass panels are currently installed at the box office and bar.
The theatre hall and bar are accessible from the foyer via a permanently installed ramp. The space situation may change depending on the production.
There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet to the left of the lift.

Assistants who accompany people with a disability to a performance will receive a free ticket.
