Spider mating

Courtship: a balance of risk and ingenuity. Insights into the astonishing strategies of native spiders in autumn.

Autumn is mating season – at least for certain species of spider. Reproduction in spiders is fascinating and complex. This is because male spiders must signal to the females that they are ready to mate – otherwise they may be mistaken for prey and eaten by the female. We will explore the diverse mating strategies of spiders and try to observe and get to know some representatives of native spider families outdoors in autumn.
