Ecosystem: Does nature need rights?

A river with fundamental rights flows through Colombia: In 2017, the Rio Atrato was granted the status of a legal subject. What does that mean in concrete terms and how did it come about? With lawyer Ximena González and photographer Juanita Escobar, we delve into the question of what the legal ruling brings to nature and the local population. González tells of the fight for the rights of the river and the consequences of the court ruling. Escobar has won several awards and travelled from the source to the mouth of the Atrato in the summer of 2022 for the Stapferhaus. With her pictures, she impressively shows the coexistence of people and water.

This talk is part of the exhibition "Nature. And us?" exhibition. The entire series of talks "Nature. And now?": www.stapferhaus.ch/und-jetzt.
