Sona Jobarteh

Only men are allowed to perform as griots, a highly respected form of storytelling with musical accompaniment in West Africa. However, Sona Jobarteh was able to escape the strict rules of the griot tradition very early on. A thorough music degree in London enabled her to combine traditional Gambian music with influences from classical and modern music. Sona Jobarteh plays the harp-like, 21-stringed kora standing up and masters this seemingly monstrous instrument with unusual virtuosity. In concert, Jobarteh delights with her delicate kora sound, which she underpins with a bright voice, accompanied by a formidable, virtuoso quintet. A fascinating artist who will be performing at Kaufleuten Zurich for the first time on 27 May 2023 and who we will be hearing a lot more of.
