Dance tips for May

In May it will be funny, profound and wild. Let yourself be surprised by these pieces.

Sense of community

Crystal Pite and Jonathon Young are back. The team will be performing their latest piece Assembly Hall as part of the Steps dance festival. At the annual meeting of a medieval society, the boundaries between reality and re-enactment become blurred, dance meets theatre and movement meets language. The play humorously explores the human need for belonging and the feeling of community. A highlight that will win over more than just medieval fans.

Talking about feelings

In BLKDOG, Botis Seva reveals how self-discovery can lead to self-destruction. Through childhood memories and traumas in adult life, the choreographer questions how we fight through our vices to find a sense of peace. The piece fuses hip-hop with other dance forms and addresses depression and its effects. Note: The performance contains abstract representations of depression, sexualised and physical violence.

The first times

There is a first time for everything. Young people in particular experience many firsts in their lives. Radikal Glizzern is a dance interpretation of the power that lies in these experiences. Cie. Wild Life celebrates the potential of youthful discovery with a spontaneous party and exuberantly dancing bodies. Let yourself be surprised and experience (perhaps) your first time at Tanzhaus Zürich.

Masculinity(s)?

What kind of masculinity suits me? What images of masculinity are in me and where do these images come from? In their piece Don't be a man, Bern-based Kollektiv F addresses images of masculinity that are prevalent in advertising, sport, music and social media. The dancers scrutinise the common images of masculinity and call for a change. You too can take a different look at this topic.

My first time … at the Winterthur Museum of Applied Arts

It’s sparkling, shimmering and glistening everywhere. To go with that, a quote from Dolly Parton: ‘There’s no such thing as too much glitter’. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.
