guerillaclassics x Museum Rietberg

Classical music is many things - and above all always a question of perspective. Four performances at the Museum Rietberg invite you to expand your own spectrum.

The sound installation

If you think of classical music, you probably have a chamber orchestra in mind, inwardly hear tenor or soprano or mentally sit on the sofa again with your parents and half-heartedly watch the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert on TV. And that is precisely why there is - and needs to be - guerillaclassics. The association is there to challenge classical music clichés. And to promote a broader view of what classical music is. For it is above all a question of perspective - and dependent on culture and context.

So in the Museum Rietberg, the association founded in 2017 has found the ideal host for its performances and collaboration with the Congolese artist Sinzo Aanza. Like every project, the association sees "The Uninterrupted Song for the City" as an invitation - to exchange, to collaborate, to grow. The four performances in front of the iconic emerald in Rietbergpark will focus on songs and scores from (pre-)colonial times that originated in the various regions of the Congo Basin and the Gulf of Guinea. These will be digitally mixed with musical forms developed by Afro-diasporic cultures and contemporary urban cultures. And played live by musicians from the collective - with cello, saxophone or electronic beats.

How these sound installations are influenced by the art from the collection, the flora and fauna of the imposing park and the spirit of Richard Wagner, a regular guest at the Villa Wesendonck during his lifetime, can be experienced on four dates at the end of June and beginning of July. Wagner, at any rate, will be turning in his grave - for a standing ovation.

From now on, musical life will take place outdoors. The open-air classics feature big names, whilst there’s plenty to discover on the smaller stages.
