Live music in March

Jazz singing always becomes exciting when the voice itself joins the other instruments in terms of playfulness and tonality. Somi's perfect command of this can be heard on her live album "Holy Room", which was nominated for a Grammy. But the US singer with Rwandan-Ugandan roots is also in her metier on the other, more velvety side of jazz singing. Which of the two sides will come into its own at Moods?

With King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the name already indicates what this group is all about: a penchant for stoner magic on the one hand and massive exaggeration on the other. The six-piece band from Australia sometimes releases five albums a year and has taken the concept album principle to the extreme: Sometimes an album is written only in major tones, sometimes only 60 BPM fast, sometimes polyrhythmic, sometimes based on microtonal intervals, sometimes exclusively acoustic, sometimes jazz. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard will certainly prove their uniqueness at the X-Tra.

Niklas Wandt is the secret king of German underground electronica. His countless projects and collaborations move between drumming, tropicalia sounds and jazz. His project with Joshua Gottmanns goes by the name Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge and wavers through the realms of synthpop. It's hard to classify Ben LaMar Gay musically. I first noticed him recently when he lent his gentle voice to the German indie band The Notwist for their track "Oh Sweet Fire". His own productions can be classified in the broad realms of jazz, are wild and boisterous and surprising. What he will present us with his ensemble at Moods will also be surprising.

Weval are on a high. The debut album of the Amsterdam duo in 2016 was still well-made electronica between reverie and club sound, but not very outstanding among the majority of releases at that time. The successor "The Weight" in 2019 was different: Here, the two had perfected their style and enriched it with elements of funk. On the last singles, the mood and sound became darker, and it remains exciting where they will drift in the paper hall.
