Dance Highlights in January

These monthly highlights from the Zurich dance scene are not to be missed.

Individual perception of time

Why do unpleasant events seem to pass more slowly than pleasant ones? Together with four other dancers, Javier Rodrigues Cobos explores the theme of Time & Memory during the residency at the tanz Residence Centre. They deal with memories and investigate the memory of the body, which is particularly interesting when dancing and learning a choreography. Through their movements they speed up or slow down the action and want to observe what feelings they convey to the audience. Let your personal perception of time surprise you.

Wonder bag

At the Incubator 2023 in the red factory, established stage artists as well as newcomers from all disciplines will once again have the opportunity to present a short play of no more than twelve minutes that is ready for the stage. With seven completely different artistic styles, approaches and statements, the platform becomes an inspiring grab bag. You should not miss this stage experience in all its wonderful diversity!

Clean cultural institutions

Who cares who empties the waste paper baskets in the theatre or cleans the toilets in the museum? This is the subject of Nuray Demir and Minh Duc's Semiotics of Dirty Work. The performers shed light on the lives of those who are condemned to dirty work. They keep the cultural institutions clean, but their lives take place outside the view of society. The performance takes up an important theme that all those who 'like to go to the theatre' should deal with.

Facing the facts

"Peace, love, unity and having fun", that's what Breaking says. But for whom? In B-Girl Battle, three dancers fight back and talk about sexism, norms and injustice that they encounter every day in the breaking scene. With their bodies they form statements and slam the facts to the floor. Who is included and who is not? An evening that addresses structural, gendered grievances whose relevance extends far beyond the breaking scene.
