Dance tips for May

In Perceptions , choreographer Anna Chiedza Spörri explores how Black men are perceived in Switzerland – and how these projections shape their self-image. Dance and spoken word intertwine to form an analysis of stereotypes, microaggressions and self-empowerment. The dancers navigate the tension between societal expectations and self-empowerment, inviting the audience to critically examine their own patterns of perception.

The piece spooning&entre.les.montagnes by Sami Lea Samira Bernath takes musical traditions out of their usual context. The starting point is the ‘Löffelä’ – a sound phenomenon from Swiss folk music. From a queer perspective, a poetic space emerges in which knowledge is not preserved but transformed. It is about what remains and what changes in the process of passing it on. A play of traces, sounds and dissonances.

The title of this event, Groove , immediately brings to mind Madonna’s hit Into the Groove . The focus is on movement and collective energy – as a participatory dance format, the course is aimed at anyone who would like to experience movement together. There are no complicated choreographies, but rather input and inspiration from the instructors. The only requirement is a desire to dance together.

One evening, two solo pieces: Double Trouble brings together works by Gabriella Imrichova and lisa laurent, which complement rather than compete with one another. Whilst the wizard is not real explores grief as a grotesque-poetic soundscape between fragility and humour, Dance. revolves around control, obsession and denial. Between collapse and self-empowerment, intense images of inner states emerge.
