Outdoor art and culture

Finally sunshine and summer! Life is outdoors again and so is art and culture. An art walk, a themed neighbourhood walk, a glass art island, art in the cemetery or a picnic in the park full of sculptures? These five art experiences are guaranteed to take place outdoors.

Art Walks at the Zurich Art Weekend

The Zurich Art Walks take place monthly throughout the year. In June, the Art Walks are organised by the Zurich Art Weekend. During a two-hour walk, a curator guides participants to various galleries within a Zurich city zone, where exhibitions of both emerging and established artists are shown. Connections are made between the history of the city and the exhibitions, and deep insights are given into the local art scene. The Art Walks are held in English.

Culture Walks at the Festival About Us!

The open-air festival About Us! is primarily about transcultural diversity. This is celebrated in music, dance, theatre, poetry slam, readings, talks and walks through the organisers' districts of Oerlikon, Affoltern and Albisrieden. For example, the walk "Die Teppichstange". It leads to the last remaining poles in Affoltern and tells their stories. Or the walk "Festplätze Albisrieden" to the public places and squares in Albisrieden.

The Art Box in Winterthur

The 12 cubic metre art box in the Sulzer Areal in Winterthur is a small, glass island of art surrounded by large buildings steeped in history. With "Blurring Time", the artist Pauline Cordier has created an object inspired by the immediate surroundings of the Katharina Sulzer site, thus creating a reference to the history of the place. Another key player in the installation is a special pigment with which the object is coated and which changes colour when exposed to light. Thus it appears in a different colour depending on the time of day. In this way, the artist addresses the influences of nature on human perception of time and space.

Cemetery Forum Sihlfeld

There is a lot of art to discover at the Sihlfeld cemetery. It is the largest cemetery and park in Zurich. Several artistic grave monuments and sculptural gravestones are located on the 288'000m2 site and tell their stories. The Cemetery Forum organises readings, concerts, guided tours and exhibitions. Currently, the internationally renowned Swiss artist duo Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger are showing works on the theme of remembrance culture in the exhibition "Death - Our Daily Bread". For this exhibition, the artists have carefully selected grave objects from the collection of the burial office and combined them with various "memory" breads to create fragile and witty installations.

The "Am Römerholz" Art Garden in Winterthur

The park surrounding the "Am Römerholz" estate, home to the collection of the Oskar Reinhart Foundation, is one of the best-preserved and most beautiful in Switzerland. Oskar Reinhart had decorated the part of the garden near the building with water basins and important sculptures that still lend grandeur to the whole ambience today, even though individual works had to be moved inside for conservation reasons. In the rectangular symmetrical park, one can not only enjoy the harmonious garden architecture with its old trees, but also enjoy a picnic basket from the museum café in the shade of the old fruit trees.
