The Art of Handcrafted Incense – Sensory Forms, Scent as Symbol (Module II.)
How can we give an invisible intention a visible and sensory form? Scent can do more than evoke memories or create an atmosphere. It can express an idea, embody an intention, and become a sensory language through which we communicate and connect with meaning. In this creative workshop by Atelier Wanderblend × Museum Rietberg, participants will explore how a narrative, concept, atmosphere, or personal intention can be translated into a unique scent. Moving beyond the origins and ingredients of incense, we will investigate how incense can become a symbolic form—one that allows us to give shape to the intangible. Through guided sensory exploration, reflective writing, and hands-on experimentation, participants will learn how to structure a scent and work with aromatic materials to develop their own incense blend. We will explore how scent influences perception, emotions, behaviour, and decision-making, and how it can help us engage with ideas in unexpected ways. The process culminates in the creation of a personal incense blend designed to embody a chosen intention, atmosphere, or narrative. When burned, the incense can serve as a sensory reminder, helping participants reconnect with that intention and incorporate it into their everyday lives as a personal ritual. Building on the foundations of Module I, this workshop offers a deeper exploration of scent as a creative and symbolic medium. Participation in Module I is welcome but not required.
